Organic Crib Mattress, Is It Worth The Money? The Truth About Natural Baby Bedding
|January 5, 2012||Posted by under Baby Gear Reviews, Newborn Baby Care|
Deciding which organic crib mattress, and other natural baby bedding you want can be difficult and confusing. Is it worth the extra cost? What are the benefits of going organic for baby bedding?
So, what is so important about buying an Organic crib mattress anyway? Crib mattresses that are made in the traditional way, with synthetic materials and fire retardants, are suspected of contributing to SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
When non organic mattresses begin to age the chemicals that are used to make them fire retardant begin to mix with molds and bacteria. When this happens, the gas that is produced is said to be more lethal than carbon monoxide.
The organic crib mattress on the other hand does not have these same problems.
Organic crib mattresses are made with all natural materials produced organically, without chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers. Materials used include cotton, all natural latex, wool, and other natural fibers occasionally.
The materials are not treated with fire retardants because they either have a much slower burn rate or they are naturally fire retardant, which is the case with wool.
Polyester and other synthetic materials ignite almost instantly, so they must be treated with the fire retardants.
The natural crib mattresses are more expensive than the synthetic versions. However, the organic mattress may be passed down from child to child, so you will end up getting your money’s worth in the long run.
It is not recommended that a synthetic crib mattress be passed down because of the off-gassing problems mentioned above.
The natural crib mattresses range from $100-$800.
Organic Crib Mattress Choices
There are a lot of good choices for quality organic crib mattresses. Almost every single organic crib mattress you could wish to purchase is available on Amazon. Let’s start with the less expensive models.
L A Baby Organic Crib Mattress The L A Baby Organic Cotton 2 In One Orthopedic Crib Mattress is an amazing value. The price is one of the lowest you will find for an organic crib mattress. This mattress comes with a 25 year warranty, has squared corners, so no gap between the mattress and crib, and is two sided. You use the firmer side for newborns and young infants, and the slightly softer side for older babies and toddlers.
Colgate Organic Crib Mattress The Colgate Eco Classica is a step up from the L A Baby organic crib mattress. This is actually one of my favorite crib matresses. This mattress is made from an eco friendly plant based foam, which means it is so much lighter and easier to change a sheet than a normal crib mattress. This one weighs in at 8 pounds! Now, this mattress is not 100% organic, because it is foam, however, this is easily remedies by using an organic mattress pad and organic sheets. I have a bad shoulder, so changing the sheets on a heavier coil mattress is close to impossible for me. The foam mattress is so lightweight though that it’s a breeze. This mattress is also extremely firm, so SIDS risk is significantly lowered.
Naturepedic Organic Crib Mattress The Naturepedic No Compromise Organic Cotton Classic 252 Crib Mattress is my top pick if you desire a 100% organic crib mattress that also meets all fire safety requirements. This is an awesome crib that truly is 100% organic. It has a fire retardant that is 100% organic, a 100% cotton interior, a waterproof barrier that is food grad pure, a dust mite barrier, strong border rods that keep the mattress from gaping, 252 strong inner spring coils for a very firm surface for your newborn and young infants, but it also flips over for a slightly softer side for older infants and toddlers. This mattress is priced higher than alternatives, but, it is also one of the best choices for parents who are very concerned with mattress materials being 100% natural. The only thing I do not like about this mattress is the weight. It weighs in at 27 pounds, so it’s best to have a helper when you are changing sheets.
Sealy Soy Foam Core Crib Mattress The Sealy Soybean Foam-Core Crib Mattress is not an organic mattress, but it does have several features that will appeal to parents wanting a more natural alternative.
